Robert Jones, Chief of the McLendon-Chisholm Volunteer Fire Department [MCVFD], which is a separate and independent organization from the City, has flatly refused efforts by the City to negotiate the terms of the 2018 contract.
The Mayor proposed terms of a new contract at the last City Council meeting after Jones rebuffed their attempts to meet and work through possible options the week before, a proposal that has gone unacknowledged by the MCVFD.
During its last two meetings, the Council established that discussions or proposals with the MCVFD must either be with the full council in an open meeting or must include the Council’s three designated representatives, which are the Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem Orchard, and Councilmember Turnbull. Though Mr. Orchard is the appointed liaison between the Council and the MCVFD, the protocol for any official discussion regarding the contract has been unambiguous.
While it is true that Mayor Pro Tem Orchard is meeting today at 9am with representatives of the MCVFD, including Robert Jones, he is acting independently of the Council and holds neither the right nor authority to negotiate on behalf of the City regarding the contract with the MCVFD.
